A little about Ibtesam

My name is Ibtesam Ahmad. Over the years I have been known as Ibty, Ibs, I.B , Ibby and now Sam, the Physio. My name is of Arabic origin and means Smile.

I qualified in the year 2000 with a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from Pune, India and have 24 years post- qualification experience in Physiotherapy. I've been with the NHS for 20 years. After qualifying  in 2000, I started my private practice as jobs in my speciality in India were few and far between. Physiotherapy was not as known to the public as it is now in India and that brought its own challenges.

I ran my practice for around 3 years with a combination of home visits and a private clinic. During those 3 years I learnt so much about setting up a private physiotherapy practice, problem solving, thinking out of the box, the challenges of a sole trader in Physiotherapy, Marketing as a skill and my arena of client caseload opened up to a variety of Neurological, Musculoskeletal, Geriatric and Paediatric patients all at once.

Ibtesam's History

In 2004 I came to the UK, secured my HCPC registration and joined Basildon & Thurrock PCT NHS Trust (known as that name at the time) as a Junior Physiotherapist. I went through a variety of junior rotations such as Musculoskeletal (which I did 4 times), Orthopaedics, Respiratory, Surgical care, Women's Health, Amputee rehab, Paediatrics (which was 6 months), Intermediate care in Community hospitals and Community Care. Each rotation used to be 4 months. In 2008 I joined BMI healthcare as a band 6 Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and learnt so much from my exposure to a private hospital in the UK.

2009 saw me take a carer break of about 6 months owing to a personal loss and I ventured into personal fitness, meditation and a healthier lifestyle shift. Even though I was a Physiotherapist ironically I had an aversion to getting on a treadmill or cross trainer myself. The six-month break saw me burn 1000 calories on these pieces of equipment on a regular basis and I tasted personal growth on a different level.

By 2010 I was back in the conventional physiotherapy world as an Orthopaedic Physiotherapist. I also managed a miscellaneous ward that had patients of all other specialties such as Care of the Elderly and Neurological Rehab across two hospitals (Maidstone and the old Tunbridge Wells Hospital NHS Trust). Roughly a year later from 2011 to 2012 I worked as a band 7 team lead Orthopaedic Physiotherapist at Princes Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (Harlow, Essex).

2012 to 2013 was my first stint as a Locum Physiotherapist in and around various settings in London such as the North London Hospice, 2 Care Home settings (that used to be with CLCH NHS Trust ) and another slow stream rehab ward setting in North London. In 2014 I joined Kent Community Health Foundation Trust and transitioned to Elderly rehab at a community hospital and 4 years later eventually joined a discharge to assess team during Covid times at a London Trust. 2021 saw me start my private practice that gradually grew to where we are today.

In the pipeline is a Masters in Physiotherapy (Advanced and Clinical) that is due to start shortly.

It has been such a remarkable journey and shaped me into who I am today.
I hope that my skills and service continue to add value to the lives of the people I meet and I am only filled with gratitude for this opportunity. To enrich my journey.
